Camp Sojourner, Girls' Leadership Camp Video

The 13th Annual Sojourner Truth Walk: We the People...Stand Together

In this moment in U.S. history, many people do not feel safe. Standing up for each other is one of the most important and strongest things we can do. This is something we actively practice at Camp Sojourner, during the summer and year-round. We will be inviting social justice groups to table at the Sojourner Truth Walk and get people involved with their work. Overall, the entire event will be geared towards honoring how we are in community with each other across whatever struggles, and how we stand up against injustice. Specific honorees will be announced in April!

The Sojourner Truth Walk will include both in-person and online options for participation. Please see event detail section below for more info.

All participants are encouraged to participate this year in honor of a leader you admire… someone who inspired/supported you when you were a child, and/or someone you admire as a leader for bringing people together or standing up against injustice. If you attend the event in person, blank signs will be available for you to write their name and/or attach a photograph. If you attend virtually, you will be encouraged to hold up a sign at home during the event, celebrating the person you have chosen to honor.

This is a family-friendly event--all are welcome!

All proceeds from the Sojourner Truth Walk benefit Camp Sojourner, a nonprofit leadership program for Philadelphia girls/youth. Our program focuses on team-building, leadership development, creative arts, and appreciation of nature. We offer Sojourners the chance to get out of the city for a one-week sleepaway camp* experience, and then to get involved in our free year-round mentoring, service projects, creative arts, and leadership activities.

The mission of Camp Sojourner is to help girls/youth become leaders who take charge of their own lives and also act as agents of positive change in their communities. Youth, families, and alumnae are key members of our Advisory Board. We fundraise year-round so that our programs can be affordable for all families, and we offer our programs on a sliding scale based on family size and income, with significant scholarships.

For more information and pictures of our year-round work, please visit our website: www.girlsleadershipcamp.org.

Movement Alliance Project
Camp Sojourner is a fiscally sponsored project of the Movement Alliance Project (MAP), meaning that Camp Sojourner does all of its own fundraising but MAP provides fiscal oversight and infrastructure. MAP's mission is to build power with community organizations working at the intersection of race, technology and inequality, running strategic campaigns, lifting up untold stories, and building infrastructure for poor and working people to win lasting power and a just society.

Sojourner Truth
This event is named in honor of Sojourner Truth, an American abolitionist, women’s rights and economic justice activist, who escaped slavery and then fought to end it. She, along with many others, has served as an inspiration and role model for generations to come. We are walking in their footsteps!

Thank you for supporting Camp Sojourner and the leadership of girls/youth!

Experience has shown that it is not only possible, but enjoyable, to set and reach your goals. Please refer to the sample letters found on your personal fundraising page center, that explains the program that the Sojourner Truth Walk supports, and you will be surprised to see how quickly friends, family, and co-workers will respond to your request to help this wonderful cause. Just remember to make it personal as well, as you want them to know that they are sponsoring YOU and YOUR efforts! And, as many companies offer charitable donation matching programs, make sure to ask your sponsors to check with their employers, as it will help you meet your goal ever more quickly.
