Michael A. Gordon, began volunteering after a 40+ years of being a lawyer. After retiring in 2021, I resumed practicing classical piano and writing but found these activities to be primarily by myself and for myself. My wife, Joan Alden, encouraged me to volunteer. Rabbi Saul Koss, with whom I have been learning Torah for 30 years, and his wife Susan, recommended that I volunteer with Bikur Cholim Of Greater Washington. 

I have always been good with older and troubled people. BCGW's assistance to such people of all faiths with transporting them to medical appointments, visiting them in hospitals, elder care and rehab facilities and delivering kosher meals, seemed like a good fit. I have found it more rewarding than any of my other jobs—after all, with these efforts, you are only doing good and it’s only about helping others. Plus, as a volunteer, I choose when I do this work, which enables me to be there for my wife, children and grandchildren and have time for my other activities. In these troubled times, efforts like those of the Bikur Cholim of Greater Washington workers and volunteers are needed to overcome the current cynicism with good deeds.
