Rachel Shapiro
Woman of AchievementEast Meadow Beth-ElJewish Center
Rachel was born in a displaced persons (DP) camp in the American zone of post-World War II Germany, where her early years were defined by the challenges faced by Jewish families in the aftermath of the Holocaust. In her youth, Rachel relocated with her family to Haifa, Israel, where she was raised with her brother Jacob by loving parents who instilled a love of family rooted in Jewish history and culture.
After completing her education, Rachel served in the Israeli Navy during the Six-Day War. Upon her departure from military service, Rachel moved to the United States, where she met her husband, Alex, also from Haifa. After spending several years in Brooklyn, they eventually settled in East Meadow, N.Y.
In 1978, Rachel and Alex became members of the East Meadow Jewish Center, where Rachel became an integral part of the community. She joined the Sisterhood, where she contributed significantly to various initiatives, including serving on the Education Committee and acting as the liaison to the Hebrew school. Sisterhood first recognized Rachel's leadership and dedication in 1993 by honoring her as its Woman of the Year. Rachel went on to serve as co-president of the Sisterhood and later assumed responsibility for overseeing the Judaica Shop, a position she continues to hold today.
Professionally, Rachel enjoyed a successful career in the corporate sector, spending 18 years in research and development at a cosmetic company.
Rachel and Alex are the proud parents of three children, all of whom are married to wonderful spouses. Together, they feel blessed to have six grandchildren who bring immense joy to their lives.
