Woman of Achievement
Congregation
B'nai Sholom-Beth David
Cyd Disler grew up in Rockaway Park in Queens with her older sister and younger brother. Her father was a judge for the NYS Unemployment Insurance Appeal Board, and her mother was an elementary school teacher.  Cyd met her husband, Alex, at a dance in Roslyn. They have been married for 35 years.  They reside in Hewlett, NY. Cyd and Alex have two adult children, a son and a daughter. Currently, Cyd enjoys attending book clubs and groups that discuss short stories. She especially enjoys stories that were originally written in Hebrew or Yiddish and translated into English. Also, she loves to crochet stuffed animals.

On a professional level, Cyd has a BA in Psychology from Hofstra University and an MA in Teaching English to Speakers of Other Languages from Hunter College. Cyd was an ESL Teacher in an elementary school in New York City. She taught children how to read, write, and speak English.  In addition, she advised classroom teachers and parents on effective ways to develop English language skills in school and at home. After 28 years of teaching, Cyd is now retired.

At Congregation B’nai Sholom-Beth David in Rockville Centre, Cyd is an active and dedicated volunteer. She serves on the Sisterhood Board and supports Tikkun Olam initiatives. She is on a committee to raise funds to purchase books about the Holocaust for local public schools. Her responsibilities include contacting Holocaust Museums and researching databases for children who were killed during the Shoah. To preserve their memory, a name plate for each child is placed inside every donated book. Cyd is also the co-editor of the synagogue newsletter, Chai Lights. Furthermore, she is a member of the Memorial Book Committee, which ensures that all names have been thoughtfully included. Each year, Cyd helps pack Purim baskets for distribution to members of the synagogue community. Cyd and her husband attend Shabbat services together on Saturdays. She is deeply honored to be recognized as this year’s Woman of Achievement from Congregation B’nai Sholom- Beth David.
