SOL ECKSTEIN
This December, our beloved Zoltan—better known by everyone as Sol—will celebrate his 99th birthday, and we are privileged to honor his remarkable life and legacy.
Born in Romania in 1926, Sol was raised in a religious household surrounded by his loving parents and five siblings. Tragically, Sol’s parents and much of his extended family did not survive the Holocaust. Miraculously, Sol, his brother Ernest, Abe, and his sisters Rose and Elvira survived the war, and after unimaginable hardship were reunited a few years later. Their triumph over the challenges they faced in their youth serves as a testament to faith, resilience, and the unbreakable bonds of family.
After the war, Sol came to the United States with resilience in his heart and hope for a new beginning. After arriving in the United States, Sol would work at a variety of jobs before settling in on the fur trade. During this time, a matchmaker introduced Sol to Martha Zeidner, the woman he would marry and have a lifetime of love, partnership, and devotion with. Sol would eventually join Martha, at her family’s real estate business.
A passionate supporter of Israel and all things Jewish, Sol’s deep love for cantorial music goes back to his childhood, when he sang in the choir at his father’s shul. That early connection to Jewish tradition has remained a cherished part of his life.
Central to Sol’s life is Congregation Etz Chaim—a true lifeline and source of strength, connection, and community. He is adored by all who know him, and his presence is a cherished part of synagogue life.
Above all, Sol’s greatest pride and joy are his children and grandchildren—his crown jewels, and the living legacy of a life built on strength, faith, and love. We are deeply honored to celebrate Sol’s extraordinary journey and his enduring impact on our community.
