Hal Moore
Agudas Achim Congregation
Hal Moore is the Blue Yarmulke designee for Agudas Achim Congregation in Alexandria, Virginia. Born in Louisiana, Hal mostly grew up in Upstate New York and New York City. The son of a paper company executive, he rarely lived in a single state for more than five years. As a career Navy Surface Warfare Officer, the moving around continued. His wife, Dee Sostrom, born in Wyoming, had a similar itinerant background (Air Force, not Navy). They met in Monterey, California at the Naval Postgraduate School. After collectively being members of 15 plus synagogues in their lives, they landed at Agudas Achim in 2024. They have four children and six grandchildren. Hal works as a consultant with the defense and intelligence communities.
Hal is the Vice-President of Programming for the Agudas Achim Men’s Club, He also sits on the Congregation’s Financial Oversight Committee. He volunteered for many years as an offshore yacht skipper supporting the Naval Academy’s offshore training squadron, sailing up and down the Chesapeake, as well as sailing between Annapolis, Newport, RI, Bermuda, and the Caribbean. He is in the midst of his Adirondack 46er qualification, where the participants scale the 46 highest peaks of the Adirondacks. He also plays golf.
