Alan Zeman
Beth Shalom Congregation

lan Zeman is honored to be part of the Beth Shalom community. He grew up in Commack, Long Island, where his appreciation for Jewish traditions and values was shaped by his Rabbi as he studied to become a Bar Mitzvah. This mentorship set him on the path he follows today. Throughout his upbringing, his family consistently encouraged his involvement in synagogue life—a commitment he is grateful to continue at Beth Shalom.

Over the years, Alan has taken an active role in the life of Beth Shalom, serving as President for three years and as Religious Committee Chair for eight (not consecutive) years. These leadership positions have allowed him to contribute meaningfully to the direction and spirit of the congregation.

Beyond these roles, Alan’s involvement has included a variety of responsibilities and activities within the Beth Shalom community. He has taken on duties such as floor manager, Gabbai, Haftarah reader, occasional Torah reader, and Shaliach Tzibur. Additionally, he has coordinated High Holiday Honors and chaired several events and projects, each experience deepening his connection to the synagogue and its members.

Among his recent accomplishments, Alan had the privilege of chairing the Beth Shalom Talent Show, a widely attended and well‑received event that brought together members of all ages to celebrate the community’s creativity. He also oversaw the installation of the digital Memorial Board, ensuring a meaningful and modern way to honor the memories of loved ones.

Alan looks forward to continuing his participation in services, holiday celebrations, and the many opportunities for learning and personal growth that Beth Shalom offers. These experiences continue to inspire his dedication to the congregation and its vibrant future.

Professionally, Alan built his career as a Physical Therapist, a role through which he was able to channel his enthusiasm for healing and caring into his daily work. Now retired, he continues to find fulfillment by dedicating his time and energy to volunteering for synagogue events and supporting the initiatives of the congregation. These activities allow him to remain engaged with the community while nurturing his passion for helping others.

In his free time, Alan cherishes spending quality moments with his wife of twenty years, Mary Okada. He enjoys computer gaming and has a particular fondness for all things Star Trek. He also makes it a priority to exercise regularly and set aside time to unwind and relax.

Alan and Mary both deeply appreciate the warm and welcoming atmosphere Beth Shalom provides. They are thankful for the sense of belonging they have found there and eagerly anticipate strengthening their relationships and further engaging with the vibrant community.
