Mario Cuffee
Beth El Congregation (Norfolk)
Mario Cuffee began working at Congregation Beth El in Norfolk, Virginia thirty-three years ago in 1993. Mario is both Maintenance Supervisor and Catering Supervisor.
As maintenance supervisor, he leads the team that “makes the synagogue go” and ensures the atmosphere and environment are consistently maintained “the Beth El way.”
Beth El’s facilities occupy the better part of an entire city block and different facets present unique challenges, so the maintenance aspects are no small task. Mario knows the buildings, the history and is very helpful when specialized contractors are onsite. As Beth El’s Catering Supervisor, Mario is indispensable! In addition to preparing the standard weekly Kiddushes, he also prepares Shabbat and special event dinners. The food he prepares is always delicious and is always presented beautifully! Long ago, Mario learned what was involved in meeting the synagogue’s standards for observing Kashrut. He ensures that all food and beverages purchased, prepared and served at Beth El meet those standards and, likewise, makes sure applicable facilities, like the kitchens, meet them as well. Mario is trusted implicitly in this regard. Quite frankly, he takes care of Beth El like it is his second home.
It just cannot be overstated how valuable Mario has been to synagogue life and programs at Beth El. Our Men’s Club has been so fortunate to have Mario’s involvement with all of our significant events for decades now. He brings peace of mind—plus, you just couldn’t have a nicer or more caring guy to work with! Mario is loved and appreciated by so many at Beth El. It is truly our privilege to honor Mario as our 2026 Men’s Club Blue Yarmulke Person of the Year!
