Welcome to the JCAB Summer Breeze 2023!
Psychologists Marshall Duke and Robyn Fivush of Emory University developed a measure called the “Do You Know?” scale. They asked children to answer 20 questions including:
Do you know where your grandparents grew up?
Do you know where your mom and dad went to high school?
Do you know where your parents met?
Do you know the story of your birth?
They found that the more children knew about their family’s story, the stronger their sense of control over their lives, the higher their self-esteem and the more successfully they believed their families functioned.
Author Bruce Feiler commented on this study: “If you want a happier family, create, refine and retell the story of your family’s positive moments and your ability to bounce back from the difficult ones. That act alone may increase the odds that your family will thrive for many generations to come.”
Jews are called “the people of the book,” but one might also say that we are “the people of the story.”
The Jewish Center of Atlantic Beach is a thriving congregation! The JCAB is also a Shul with a story, and we are all enriched by knowing and celebrating that story.
The JCAB was first organized in August of 1949.
As we begin our 75th year, it is appropriate that our honorees this year help tell the story of the JCAB, while making our shul and our community stronger.
Jean & Armand (z”l) Lindenbaum, have been connected to the Shul since its early days. Their story is our story, and they have written – and continue to write – so many of our important chapters. Andy Rubin has been a loyal member for decades and a long-time Village of Atlantic Beach public servant, reinforcing the JCAB role as the spiritual center of the community. Sara Haimoff is a unifying and energizing force within our growing community of young families. She and Rabbi Saul are literally writing the next chapter of JCAB.
Please join us to learn our story, celebrate our honorees, support JCAB, and have a wonderful time together. Enjoy!
