OHEL, started in 1969 as a small foster care agency, today cares for individuals at all stages of life, including foster care and preventive services for families at risk. OHEL operates 100 licensed residential facilities for over 450 young adults and adults with psychiatric and developmental disabilities; 4 day habilitation programs structured around skill building and socialization for adults with psychiatric illness and developmental disabilities; 2 licensed mental health clinics; and 3 domestic violence shelters and a counseling program for women and children fleeing abuse. OHEL offers geriatric services, employment services, school-based services to over 40 schools in New York City, Nassau County, and Northern NJ, community and professional outreach, and year round recreation and camp programs for 900+ campers of ALL abilities. OHEL also provides trauma counseling for personal or communal tragedies.
