Message from
Harav Dovid Cohen, Mora D'Asra, Ohel
'Forward in Strength'

In Holy Scripture, directions are described in a way where we can learn more than translation.
The word for "east" is קדמה, which means "front", because the natural stance for mankind is to face east.
Therefore ימה which normally means "the sea" is "west", which refers to the Mediterranean Sea,
which is likened to the person standing in East Israel who is facing east.

A wise person observed that if you stand in the Red Sea between Africa and Arabia facing north,
Somalia (from שמאל- the left hand) is to your left, and Yemen (from ימין- the right hand) is to your right.

The Talmud explains why one who is frightened in time of war, is exempted from battle;
this is because if he turns around to run away from the enemy, it is considered putting the rest of the warriors in danger
because "תחילת נפילה ניסה" - which means - "The beginning of defeat is running away"
and that person is destroying morale which leads to defeat.

It is therefore fitting for Ohel, who has been a warrior for Klal Yisroel, for many diverse communities,
for over fifty years, to have a battle cry at this time of "Forward in Strength"
because if retreating is weakness, strength is engendered by going forward.
Let us all go Forward in Strength.

IN HONOR OF
David Mandel

Kol Hakavod for all that you do for Ohel.

We thank you and your entire Development staff

The one who always had the right words to say,
otherwise she would offer to pay.
The one who had a schedule from morning to night,
but always had time to do what's right.

The one who arranged every trip and fun day,
who knew every hotel along the way.

In tribute to
My dear daughter, Miriam a"h

Who was she? Miriam was our first born. She taught me to be a mother. She gave us our first grandchild. She taught me the excitement of firsts and brought joy to my life.  She was a very loving daughter who anticipated needs....needs I did not even know I had!

Miriam's אמונה and בטחון gave her strength throughout her life's journey.  She was a wife, a mother and grandmother who loved and led her family בדרך התורה.

Our family shared Miriam with her Ohel family. Miriam believed that Ohel's commitment to "tent" the needs of the Jewish community is of paramount importance, that Ohel embraces and affects the social challenges of our community.  Miriam considered working for Ohel to be a privilege, giving purpose to her days (and nights!).

Whether for her own family or the Ohel family, Miriam never shied away from a difficult or challenging task.  And so she had a very fulfilling and meaningful life.
I loved her and I miss her.

In memory of our wonderful, dear sister,
Miriam Weiss Blumenkrantz, A"H

Miriam's special devotion to Ohel was mirrored by her special devotion to all those who had the good fortune of coming into her life.

Miriam was full of life, always bringing a smile to others, and getting things done for all her children, her family, and for her Ohel families, clients and fellow staff members. No matter how late or early the hour of day, no matter whether a דבר שבקדושה, or a necessity of life, or a simple pick you up, it got done with devotion, zest, and beyond expectations.

Miriam always said we are here in this world to help people who need help. Even every day and without judgement.
We are here to put a smile on their face. Just like Ohel sets out to do everyday! This was Miriam's constant Avodas Hashem.

We will continue to miss her smile, her laugh, and her excitement for the service of Hashem
and all his creations but she has taught us all well to smile and move forward in our Avodas Hashem.

L'zecher nishmas our beloved mother and grandmother,
Miriam Weiss Blumenkrantz מרים בת הרב בנימין ע"ה

Her connection to the Ribbono Shel Olam was extraordinary and inspiring.
Her emunah was exemplary and she was a role model to all.

Her devotion to our family was truly unparalleled. She was the busiest woman, yet always made time for us. Each birthday, anniversary and milestone was so important and special to her and we felt it.

She had a remarkable passion for helping others, which is why Ohel pays tribute to her tonight.
She was a shining example of chesed, kindness and compassion, and treated everyone with utmost dignity and respect.

The tremendous void we feel can only be filled by following in her ways.
May her neshama have an aliya and may she be a melitza yosher for our
entire family, as well as the staff and clients at Ohel.

She illuminated our family with her vibrancy, vivacity, and presence.
She guided us with her wisdom, deeply caring nature, and family devotion.

She inspired us with her boundless energy and infinite achievements.
She was a pillar of virtue and strength which was, and still is,

Her memory lives on in those she left behind, as we strive to emulate her countless deeds

In tribute to and in memory of Miriam Weiss, A"H, my Ohel mother, mentor, and friend.
Miriam built me up in my position in the Ohel Development Department, and taught me how to find the answers when I felt stuck. I was inspired by her courage and determination. With her by my side, I felt safe and protected.

Over the years, we worked so well together, constantly sharing creative ideas with one another.
She was a legend at Ohel, praised for her work, and remained strong in
being the voice for others as she truly believed in every individual.

We developed a strong professional bond, as well as friendship. Outside of working many long
days in the office, we enjoyed each other's company, whether getting our nails done,
bike riding, shopping, celebrating smachot, Shabbos meals, or breakfast dates.

Miriam took great pride in her family and treated me like her own family. She has made a
powerful impact on my life and continues to mentor me from above.

In honor and memory of
Miriam Weiss A"H

I have known Miriam for many years.
I have seen her selfless devotion to Ohel clients in mental health,
developmental disabilities, foster care, and domestic violence.

I know of her compassion for parents, siblings and children,
her facility in speaking with young and old alike,
her respect and attention to Board members and colleagues as well.

Miriam used her brilliant mind, boundless energy and pure heart
to raise important funds for essential programs
through her sheer force of will, her hard work, and even sometimes,
seemingly through miracles.

Miriam was a unique and exceptional person who is very, very missed
and will long, long be remembered. She gave so much of her life
to her family, and to her Ohel family. May she be a מליצה ישר for all of us.

In memory of my beloved Miriam, A"H
Miriam was more than just my boss.
She was my surrogate mother and close friend.
How many people can say they've been on vacation with their boss,or gone clothes shopping
with their boss, or had their mezuzahs purchased for them by their boss?
Miriam taught me everything I know about fundraising
and lifted me up both personally and professionally, and always had my back.
My life has been much improved by knowing her
and I will feel her loss for the rest of my lifetime.
With much love and gratitude,

Tribute to Miriam Weiss A"H

You can shed tears that Miriam A"H is gone,
Or you can smile because she lived.
You can close your eyes and pray that she will come back,
Or you can open your eyes and see all that Miriam A"H left.
You can remember Miriam A''H and only that she is gone.
Or you can cherish her memory and it will live on.
My mentor, my friend, will be forever missed and remembered.

To put into words the impact that Miriam, A"H
had over the past 20 years at Ohel is utterly impossible.
She was there every step of the way for all of her employees, co-workers, clients,
friends, and even strangers. She devoted all of her time and energy to making sure everyone's
needs were met. I experienced that firsthand on a daily basis. She  was everything you would
want in a colleague and friend.  Although it is hard to be at work  every day without her,
we know we are continuing to do what she lived for.
Miriam, my memories of you will stay with me forever,
and I will be eternally grateful for the impact you made on my life.

Miriam Forever Enriched My Life & Enabled Me To Find My HOME.

Professional colleague, closest of friend, and a rock of support to myself
during sometimes difficult times, Miriam dedicated her life to helping
individuals and families find a place called HOME.

And that HOME could be many things - physical, psychological or both.
Miriam was blessed with a selfless sensitivity to help others find their HOME.
A place of purpose, a place of peace, a place of clarity, a place of happiness,
a place closer to Hashem.
Miriam herself was HOME.
If you needed understanding. You went HOME to Miriam.
If you needed creative genius. You went HOME to Miriam.
If you needed support. You went HOME to Miriam.
If you needed chizuk. You went HOME to Miriam.

Indeed, in so many ways Miriam was the keeper of the Ohel tent.
Through her professional skills, Ohel thrived, through her dedication she inspired.
I deeply cherish the friendship I had with Miriam and I miss "our beloved" Miriam every day.
She was a giant amongst us all. She will always be in my HOME.

In loving memory of

Miriam Weiss, A"H

who was a devoted Eishes Chayil to her
beloved husband, Rabbi Dr. Gimpel Weiss.
Sadly, his untimely death at the age of 38
left her to the unenviable position of raising
her 5 young daughters without their father.
Thankfully, she met a wonderful  man named
Mordechai Blumenkrantz who became her
second husband and surrogate father to her daughters.
Miriam was a kind, intelligent and much loved wife,
mother, grandmother and daughter. She will be
sorely missed by her family, friends and all those who knew her.

Memories are strong and important.

We take this moment to honor some of them.

Memories of making a wedding together, the first time for each of us.
Memories of holidays, and simchas, and milestones. Memories of times
of challenge, and the comfort of facing them together. Memories of
places -- Baltimore, Calgary, New York, and more. Memories of a
caring and capable woman, who was never too busy to remember
to send a mazal tov or a Yom Tov greeting. Memories of that
dazzing smile, and that unfailing energy.

May the memory of Miriam a"h always be for a blessing.

פיה פתחה בחכמה ותורת חסד על לשונה
Miriam enriched our lives and the lives of our children and grandchildren.
Our love for her and the many ways we miss her are beyond words.
We know that she is sorely missed at Ohel, too.

Ohel meant so much to Miriam because the work of Ohel
Children's Home and Family Services personified her being.

Miriam's essence was giving. She loved to give. If at times life put her
on the receiving end, her heart overflowed with gratitude. And with her
grateful heart, she would give more and more.

With wisdom, she tailored her giving to the needs of the individual -
whether it was a family member, a friend, a colleague, a client of
Ohel or a stranger who had the good fortune to chance her way.
Miriam is a shining example for all of us. May we merit to follow in her ways.
