Jennifer and Joel Shulman married in 1987 and have been members of Congregation Israel for thirty-four years. They met while pursuing degrees in architecture at Pratt Institute in Brooklyn. Joel grew up in Elizabeth, attended the JEC, and spent his summers in Bradley Beach. After graduating from Pratt, he moved back to New Jersey and joined AGM Architecture + Design, now the Gruskin Group in Springfield, where he is a principal of the forty-person firm. Jennifer grew up in the Bronx, moved to New Jersey after graduation, and has since worked for Fortune 50 Companies in corporate office workplace strategy and planning

Jennifer and Joel have worked on many architectural projects, both in the United States and internationally, for Jewish, pharmaceutical, financial, retail, and educational organizations and companies, including Jewish Federation of Greater MetroWest, Merck & Co., Bank of America, Verizon Wireless, and Kean University.

The couple have been blessed with two wonderful daughters, both of whom attended The Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy/Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School in Livingston. Stephanie lives in Washington State with her husband, Ben, and is a freelance artist. She was part of the first youth group led by Rabbi Chaim Marcus, when he served as the shul’s youth director. Lyndsey, who lives in Queens, is a media traffic control manager at NBC.

Always dedicated to the community and the success of Congregation Israel, Joel has been involved in many shul endeavors, including design and construction of Mikvah Yisroel and the keilim mikvah, social hall renovations, sukkah setup, the shul board and seating committee, shul safety, and design of the youth director/assistant rabbi’s residence.

Congregation Israel and Springfield will always be home for Jennifer and Joel, for the community, friends, and family (there are a lot of relatives living in town and their number is growing). Their parents, Ira and Lynne Shulman, z”l, who spent many yomim tovim in town, felt like this was their second home.

Jennifer and Joel sincerely thank Congregation Israel for this honor and look forward to many more years celebrating with this amazing shul community.
