Norman Soroko
Temple Israel - Norfolk

Norman Soroko is a member of Temple Israel, it’s Men’s Club and Ritual Committee. and Vice President of Community Outreach at Temple Israel and heads Temple Israel’s Shomrim Committee.  He previously was a 30-year former member of Congregation Beth El and a former eighteen-year member of its Board of Directors; its Men’s Club where he served as its President for fourteen years; its Board of Directors; Chairman of their annual Blue Yarmulke Man of the Year program where he was selected as a recipient in 1994. He also chaired their annual Men’s Club Shabbat program each spring; former Chairman of the Shomrim Committee that cared for the deceased until burial for many years and put together a booklet, titled, Of Death and Mourning, to help families at their time of need. He is also a member of B’nai Israel Congregation in Norfolk and the Chabad House.

 

Norman was the first person selected to be President of the Seaboard Region Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs from Tidewater. He served as President from 1999-2001. His presidency covered Conservative Men’s Clubs from Tidewater to the Washington, DC. Area. He was serving on its Advisory Board and the Board of Directors of the Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs in New York. He is currently President of the Board of Directors for the Jewish Museum and Cultural Center in Portsmouth, Virginia.

 

In July, 2011, Norman was awarded the Ma’asim Tovim award, doer of good deeds at the Men’s Club Biannual convention. It was the highest award achieved by a man and he was the first from Tidewater to receive this award.

 

In April, 2018, Norman was awarded the Lifetime Achievement award by the Seaboard Region, Federation of Jewish Men’s Clubs for his involvement with Men’s Clubs and the Seaboard Region for over 30 years.

 

He was active in the Norfolk Relay for Life for the American Cancer Society for over 20 years, having raised alone almost $300,000 over many years of involvement. He served as chairman and as accounting chairman for the annual event. He also supported and participated for many years in the Step up to Cure for Diabetes.

 

Norman, the son of Haim “Hymie Soroko and Freda Weisman Soroko, both of blessed memory was a 1974 honor graduate of Granby High School and a 1978 graduate of Old Dominion University School of Business. He earned his Bachelor of Science in Business Administration. He was a member of the Alumni Association and a member of Alpha Kappa Psi Professional Business Fraternity. In November of 2019, he was inducted into the Wall of Fame at Granby High School for his continued work with the American Cancer Society.

 

He worked for many banks in his lifetime. He was employed in the bookkeeping department at Berkley Citizens Federal Savings and Loan from 1978 to 1982; Bank of the Commonwealth from 1982 to 1991 in the credit card division; Princess Anne Commercial Bank’s loan department till December 31, 1991. He was retired from Bank of America after 17 years of service having worked in various departments of the Credit Card Division. He began working for Citigroup in November 2008 until January, 2015.

 

Beginning in September, 2015, Norman was hired by the Norfolk Public School System to work as a Guest teacher for the Public-School System until he retired in 2021. He taught Sunday School at Congregation Beth El for five years until retiring in 2020. He also worked for Altmeyer Funeral Home from November, 2005 to March, 2018 and then began working for Graham Funeral Home in Chesapeake until September, 2018.

 

Now fully retired, he enjoys doing his community programs and stays involved as much as he can.
