Michael Freilich – a devoted husband, father, friend – passed away on February 15, 2025, at the age of 80.  Born in Baltimore, Maryland (as he liked to say, “by accident”) and raised in Hanover, Pennsylvania, Michael’s deep connection to Jewish life began at home. Inspired by his parents’ involvement in their community and the Jewish Theological Seminary, he developed a strong foundation in Jewish learning and a lifelong commitment to building and sustaining Jewish life.

Michael continued that journey through his studies at Columbia University and JTS. Eventually, his love of philosophy and study of Jewish texts led him to practice law for 50 years, serving his clients and community with integrity, intelligence, and care.

But Michael’s legacy extended far beyond his legal work. To those who knew him, he was a scholar, a teacher, a community builder, and a trusted friend. He never set out to be any of those things—but his wisdom, thoughtful guidance, and deep knowledge left a lasting impression on everyone around him. His family often called him a “storehouse of information,” and in the FJMC, he found a place where his gifts could shine.

Michael believed deeply in a living, breathing Judaism—one that honors tradition while adapting to the present; one that welcomes spirited debate and embraces reconciliation; one that allows us to laugh at ourselves, admit our mistakes, and move forward together.

And yet, above all his roles, achievements, and honors, Michael’s most cherished title was that of husband, father and grandfather. It was within his family that his love, humor, and wisdom shone brightest. We will miss him deeply, but we carry his legacy in the stories he told, the values he lived, and the love he gave so freely.
