Joel is a former IDF Lone Soldier and author of multiple best-selling books about Israel, including the memoir The 188th Crybaby Brigade about his experience as a tank gunner in the Israeli army, the cookbook Balaboosta which he co-wrote with Israeli chef Einat Admony,
and the recently released Israel 201.
A Chicago native, Joel attended the Solomon Schechter Day School in Skokie, Illinois, and Jewish summer camps in the American Midwest.
