HONOREES

Sandy and Avi Steiner, Guests of Honor

Both originally from Montreal, Avi came to New York in 1997 and Sandy followed in 1999. They married that same year and began their life together in the Big Apple on the Upper West Side. They moved to Livingston in 2009 and joined Suburban Torah where they found our wonderful community and formed strong friendships that feel more like family.

As the parents of then-young children — Lilly, Sam and Sophia — they both got involved in Jewish communal life here in town early on.

Sandy took on leadership roles with IEBECC, Suburban Torah’s youth department, and along with amazing partners, has helped oversee the ongoing renovations to our shul. Sandy is also very involved at the Joseph Kushner Hebrew Academy/ Rae Kushner Yeshiva High School where she led KPAC and is the current co-President of the Board.
Professionally, Sandy is a CPA, and worked for many years in accounting and international tax, before her career switch to professional volunteer.

Sandy loves her kids, their dog Ozzie, giving back, and with a strong coffee can sometimes tolerate her husband’s nonsense.

Avi joined the Suburban Torah Board, starting on the Finance Committee, before eventually becoming an officer, and then, unintentionally, President. Avi is perhaps the longest-serving President in Suburban Torah history. He and his fellow officers led the shul through the pandemic and a new Rabbi search, and managed to help the shul community come out of these events strong and united. Since leaving office, he has taken a more active role on the synagogue’s security team. Avi, along with Rabbi Proops, was also part of the team that worked on the acquisition of the VFW building for the shul.

Professionally, Avi is a Managing Director at J.P. Morgan, where he covers the High Yield Automotive and Media sectors.

Avi enjoys running, puppies, and bringing a cold coffee (key ingredient almond milk) to SSTC every Shabbat. Avi does not not enjoy socks.

Rachel and Josh Joffe, Young Leadership Awardees

Josh and Rachel first met on a blind date in November 2010, while living on the Upper East Side of Manhattan. Just over a year later, in March of 2012, they were married. They continued to reside in the Upper East Side – where their oldest son, Caleb, was born – until moving to Livingston in May of 2017. They welcomed their second child, Livi, later that year.

Rachel was born and raised in Livingston while Josh grew up on Long Island. As their family grew, the allure of the suburbs intensified – along with the traffic on the LIE – which led them back to Livingston.

Once settled in the SSTC community, Rachel joined the IEBECC Board as co-chair. Along with fellow co-chairs Sheara Goldenthal and Yael Wasserman, Rachel served the preschool for five years, during which time they led Director searches, assisted in interviewing teachers, helped champion Camp Cochavim, and provided general support to the IEBECC community.

Each week, Rachel and Livi deliver challah to the elderly and homebound through Naomi’s Challah. They also enjoy cooking for others and participating in meal trains. Josh is a member of the inaugural class of Hatzalah of Metrowest and can be found learning with the Men’s Club Mishmar on most Thursday evenings. Throughout their time in Livingston, the Joffes have been active in volunteering for youth programming, supporting community growth events, and opening their home to current and prospective Shul members.

Outside their family and volunteer commitments, Josh is Managing Director of Investments for  Revolve Wealth Partners, and Rachel is a Senior Manager in Human Resources for PwC. After much deliberation with their kids on the benefits of a dog, Cooper joined the family in September 2022.
