Alexander Torres
Guardian Award
For more than 20 years, Alexander Torres, our WDS Facilities Manager - affectionately known around campus as Coach Alex - has been a beloved and indispensable member of the Westchester Day School community. Originally from Peru, Alex immigrated to the United States at age 12 with his parents and older brother, not knowing what the future would look like or where he would end up. He graduated White Plains High School, where he was actively involved in sports, with a special love for soccer. His passion for the game led him to become a coach, and he earned multiple USSF coaching licenses. He's traveled to Brazil, Spain, and England to continue learning and expand his soccer knowledge and training.
When Alex began working in Facilities at Westchester Day School, he felt welcomed with open arms by the school community. Alex recalls how WDS quickly became a place where he could grow, learn, and find purpose. Over the years, he relays with joy how he met, and connected with, so many amazing people: students, staff, and families who have all played a part in shaping who he is today.
One of the things Alex is most grateful for is how this community not only supported him but also welcomed his daughter with the same love and warmth. "Seeing her grow up surrounded by the same kindness and encouragement that I’ve experienced here has meant the world to me. It’s a reminder of how special this school really is."
More recently, in addition to being the Facilities Manager for WDS, Alex took on the role of head coach for the WDS Wildcats soccer team. Given this opportunity has truly been an honor. It’s one of the most rewarding parts of his journey here. Through the camps, small clinics, and countless practices, he has watched the kids grow not just as players but as people. Seeing their excitement, teamwork, and love for the game makes every moment worth it. Alex notes that it’s a blessing to be part of something that brings so much pride and joy to both the students and the coaches.
"This school means more to me than words can express. It’s not just a job it’s my home. Every thank you, every small moment of connection has made a difference in my life. I’m truly grateful for all the love, respect, and support I’ve found here, and I’m proud to be part of such a caring and inspiring community."
