Wendy Gertelman-Nenner
Eshet Chayil Award

Wendy grew up in Kew Gardens Hills, where she developed the strong values of community and connection that would guide her throughout her life.

In 11th grade, she attended a Shabbaton in West Hempstead for the very first time. From that very visit, she felt something special — the small-town warmth, the friendly faces, and the genuine sense of community left a lasting impression. She quietly decided that one day, she would make West Hempstead her home.

That feeling was strengthened after Wendy spent a year studying at Midreshet Moriah in Israel, where she formed close friendships with many people from West Hempstead. She went on to spend numerous Shabbosim at the homes of the Kahns, Taubenfelds, and Simons, deepening her connection to the community she admired.

In the summer of 2007, the Nenners moved to West Hempstead and joined the Young Israel of West Hempstead. They built their home in the community Wendy had dreamed about since high school. They davened at the ECC minyan, where Wendy quickly became an active and dedicated member.

Wendy served on the youth committee and was deeply involved in Sisterhood, acting as the ECC liaison, helping pack shalach manos, serving on a cooking team, joining the welcoming committee, and taking on the role of treasurer — a role well suited to her professional life as an accountant. Wendy’s financial management and exceptional care is a big part of why the YIWH Sisterhood continues to find itself on excellent financial footing. For the past four years, she has co-chaired the Yad Leah clothing drive.

She was also very active in her children’s elementary school, always stepping forward when something needed to be done.

Of all her accomplishments, Wendy is most proud of her children — Yehuda, Ezra, and Aryeh. Her love, pride, and commitment to them are unwavering.  She is a regular at sporting events and is their biggest cheerleader in everything that they do.

Wendy’s journey has included many chapters, each one strengthening her resilience and deepening her roots in the community she chose so many years ago. Tonight, we honor not only her service and dedication, but the quiet determination, warmth, and integrity she brings to everything she does.
