Our honorees, Joan and Jimmy Berkowitz , are celebrating two milestone anniversaries in May.  They got married on May 14, 1961 and joined HERJC on May 17, 1961!!!   For the past sixty years Joan and Jimmy have been treasured members of the HERJC family.  They are among the original members of the Patron’s Society, and support HERJC in every way.

Jimmy met Joan at the dentist office where she worked, and the rest is history.  After getting married and joining HERJC, the Berkowitz’s raised three beautiful children,  Lori, Susan and Robert.  HERJC was always an important part of their family life. 

 

Over the years Joan and Jimmy have been blessed with five grandchildren, Lindsay, Matt, Gus, Lauren and Charlie, who bring them endless joy.

 

In 1989 Jimmy retired from his position as Managing Director at Morgan Stanley and had more time to spend with Joan and the family, and to do the things he loves. He plays golf, does crossword puzzles, reads books, takes classes at the local college, and takes long walks with his dogs.   As a couple, they enjoy spending time with friends and family.  They are both avid readers and will often discuss the books they are reading at great length.  Joan and Jimmy are very philanthropic and donate time and money to various charities, especially for children and animals.  Joan was very involved in their schools while her children were growing up.  She was a member of the sisterhood at the Temple, and belonged to different organizations such as Hadassah.

 

In 2009 Joan and Jimmy moved to Florida. Since that time, they have remained very connected to HERJC and are most deserving of the first Kesher Award.  Kesher means connection in Hebrew, and Joan & Jimmy’s strong ties to HERJC, despite the distance, exemplify the true meaning of the word.
