Remembering Joe Tammam z"l
JOE TAMMAM made the world a better place. He was a person who was totally committed to his family, business and the Jewish community — in particular, Congregation Israel of Springfield. He had a passion for life and was in love with his family.
One of eight children, Joe was born in Tripoli, Libya. His parents were committed to Torah values and Jewish education, and found it necessary to send Joe to Italy after his Bar Mitzvah to continue his schooling at the ORT school in Milan. In 1963, Joe immigrated to the United States with his family. He earned a degree in Marketing Management from City College of New York and also served in the US Air Force. Joe was an active member of the Jewish War Veterans of New Jersey and the JCC of Central New Jersey. He was also a member of Knesset Israel Garment Center Congregation in Manhattan.
Joe was an active member of Congregation Israel for many years. Inspired by our beloved Rabbi Turner, zt”l, Joe became an enthusiastic participant in many Shul activities. He was very honored to be chosen as the recipient of the Edward Konigsberg Award in 2004. He always appreciated the efforts of all those who helped Congregation Israel grow and thrive.
Joe’s desire to renovate the Beit Midrash was his last project. Together with his wife Sondra, he completed the renovation in 2009. Sadly, he did not live to see its dedication. His memory is with us and serves as an inspiration to all who knew him.
We established the Joseph Tammam Memorial Youth Community Service Scholarship Award, knowing the joy Joe would have felt in supporting talented and deserving young members of our Shul in pursuing their college studies. Even though it has been some years since he was taken from us, Joe’s oldest granddaughter, Raffaella, who was not even two and a half years old when he passed, still talks of him often, cherishes him, and knows in her heart that he is with Hashem.
Joe, we miss you and remember you always.
