B'nai Shalom of Olney - Andy Shuman

Andy Shuman is a native Washingtonian and grew up in Silver Spring, MD. He and his twin sister are the youngest of 5 children of Anne and the late Joseph Shuman. He and his family were active members of a conservative shul in Silver Spring where he attended religious school and became a Bar Mitzvah in 1979.

Andy graduated from Springbrook High School and went to college at The University of Hartford in Connecticut. There he was a member of AEPi fraternity where he held several offices including Vice President. Andy was one of the editors of the University’s yearbook and graduated with a degree in Electronic Engineering Technology and minors in Business and Computer Science.

After graduation, Andy joined his father and two brothers, Al and Steve, in running their family business, The Trover Shop. The stores were a staple in Washington, DC for over 50 years and served the Library of Congress, Congress, Senate and the Supreme Court along with many others and was a favorite of DC residents and commuters as well. The bookstores hosted many political figures and celebrities for book signings over the years. After the business shuttered its doors in 2009, Andy started his own business and continues to serve his clients with the same degree of attention  and detail he demonstrated when working in his family business.

Andy and his wife Cindy are raising their two children, Asher and Liza, in Olney, MD where they are a strong presence at B’nai Shalom of Olney. Andy has carved a niche as an all-around jack of all trades. He spends many hours each week making sure the building is in top shape. He is always available to do whatever needs to be done and as chairman of the house committee, he along with the committee has ensured the facility is in the best possible shape it can be in. He also sits on the security committee and chairs our two largest fundraisers each year, outdoing his previous year’s profits. Andy attends services and minyan regularly and attends most events, always with a helping hand.

Andy enjoys spending time with his family and friends at the beach, is a voracious reader, loves to take on construction projects and is a proficient chef in his kitchen. Both Cindy and Andy have made wonderful friends at BSO and their kids are growing up rooted in the community they call home.
