HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir

The brainchild of Maestro Matthew Lazar, HaZamir: The International Jewish High School Choir is a network of 35 teen choral chapters across North America and Israel, involving over 400 teen singers in a highly structured music and education program. Through the medium of Jewish choral music, HaZamir, directed by Vivian Lazar, treats teens to a fun and nurturing community, inclusive of all levels of Jewish observance, geography, cultural and socio-economic backgrounds. HaZamir builds an inclusive and positively identified community of young Jews and instills a lifelong commitment to Jewish culture, the Jewish people and the State of Israel.  The HaZamir program includes an auditioned Chamber Choir, comprised of those HaZamir singers with more formal musical training and who desire an even more challenging musical experience, a leadership development track and a Parents’ Council.

The HaZamir experience combines rigorous musical training, retreats, social events and an on-line connected community. Each year all HaZamir chapters learn the same repertoire at their weekly local rehearsals and then come together for an annual three-day Festival that culminates in a performance at a major concert venue such as Lincoln Center or Carnegie Hall. These HaZamir performances are musically brilliant and magically inspirational. They are a unique platform for presenting contemporary and classic Jewish choral music to an expanding audience.

HaZamir singers speak about how HaZamir has changed their lives, the important international friendships they have made and a new-found love for Jewish music and choral excellence. HaZamir builds a strong foundation for future Jewish leadership as evidenced by the many alumni engaged in Jewish musical and communal pursuits, both lay and professional.

HaZamir alumni span over 20 years!  Many return each year to sing together in the Alumni choir and continue their relationship to Jewish choral music through participation in Zamir Noded, the North American Jewish Choral Festival and Zamir’s on-line community.

In New York, HaZamir alumni have come together to create Zamir Noded, the Zamir Choral Foundation’s newest ensemble for young adult singers aged 18-30.  Now in its third year, Zamir Noded continues to expand its roster of young adult talent.

HaZamir’s reputation has grown dramatically in recent years, in great part due to social media and word of mouth among the teen participants.  New chapters are forming in the Mid-West, South and in Israel; expanded programming and new initiatives connect teens to one another and to Jewish life.
