Tonight’s gala theme is based on a famous quote from the Torah that has become part of our liturgy: “Mah tovu ohalecha Ya’akov, mishk’notecha Yisrael: How good are your tents Jacob, your dwelling places Israel.” In the minds of the rabbis who crafted our prayer service, the biblical tents were easily transformed into the modern-day synagogues. The tent metaphor though, goes far beyond that usage. Put simply, our tent is our community. Despite COVID-19, the Schechter tent has allowed us to maintain community in the face of a pandemic of estrangement, and to continue to educate and help nurture our children. Tonight’s celebration honors our community’s resilience and its many supporters.
